The Least Popular Pizza Toppings Across the U.S.

When it comes to pizza toppings, we’ve all got favorites. Pepperoni comes to mind, maybe sausage, mushrooms, bell peppers, olives and others. What about your least favorite pizza toppings? Are there toppings that make a pizza simply inedible for you?

You may not be alone in your opinion of terrible pizza toppings. There are some strange topping choices out there, but here are some of the worst.

Check out these unpopular pizza toppings and see if you agree or not.

Broccoli

Pizza isn’t generally regarded as a healthy food, so when things like broccoli start popping up on menus as a pizza topping, there’s bound to be some questions. What’s with broccoli on pizza? Is this pizza trying to fool us into thinking it’s healthy? Is it trying to avoid being eaten? Even the Pixar film “Inside Out” makes fun of this topping—and rightfully so. It doesn’t go well with much of anything else you would want to put on pizza, and it kind of ruins the indulgence of getting pizza in the first place.

Artichoke

Artichoke is not an uncommon topping, but those who don’t like it really don’t like it. The bitter taste might go well on a Greek topping pizza, but even that’s a stretch. Even vegetarians don’t even always like this meaty topping. It’s bitter, it gives the pizza a weird texture and it’s often more expensive than other toppings. Plus, it feels kind of weird to be eating just the heart of something. (Where did the rest of the artichoke go?) It seems wasteful.

Eggplant

There is a time and a place for eggplant, and pizza is not one of them. First of all, to prepare eggplant properly requires a lot of work to slice it, leach out the moisture and properly season it—and then there’s still the rubbery skin to deal with. It’s bitter and mushy and can ruin a pizza pretty quickly if it gets soggy. Unless your pizza chef knows exactly what they’re doing and you really love eggplant to begin with, it’s easy to avoid this treacherous topping.

Anchovies

The prize for the weirdest common pizza topping (as well as the most universally disliked) has to go to anchovies. These oily little fish fillets can be delicious on a Neapolitan pizza, where they are treated as a gourmet item and the pizza is a completely different animal than American style. But put them on a frozen pizza or a delivery pie and they are the most polarizing topping imaginable. For those who really love anchovies on pizza, they can and should let their pizza-topping freak flags fly proudly (in solitude, preferably outdoors, so the rest of us don’t even have to smell that hot fish).

Now that you know the most unpopular pizza toppings, you can cleanse your mental palate with a delicious pizza topped with your favorite things. When you need great frozen pizza for your business, be sure to contact Giovanni’s Frozen Pizza to get a pie you’ll love.
