From Thai chicken to sliced dill pickles, you’ll find pizzas across the country being served with just about every type of topping you can think of. Pizza is a favorite food with Americans, probably because of its customizability. Americans have gotten pretty creative with their pizza topping combinations over the years. Have you ever wondered about what might be the favorite pizza topping in your part of the country?
As a pizza distributor, we actually weren’t too surprised to find that pepperoni is the favorite pizza topping across the U.S. First of all, it’s delicious! But we’ve also noticed that it’s the type of pizza that we make at Giovanni’s Frozen Pizza that is in the highest demand. However, that doesn’t mean you won’t find a few other pizza toppings trending in different parts of the country. Here’s the breakdown of the top pizza toppings by region:
- Northeast: It’s actually hard to pin down the favorite pizza toppings among our pizza lovers on the East Coast. Out of all the regional areas across the U.S., the Northeast is the most likely to experiment with their pizza topping choices. In fact, a majority say they don’t stick to a “usual” when ordering a pizza. We do know, however, that New York style crust is a winner across the east coast—and not just amongst New Yorkers. Sorry, Chicago!
- South: Down south, we can say confidently that they love their meats! Of course, pepperoni is the number one favorite with southerners as well, but bacon and ham are close seconds. Meat lovers pizzas are the obvious favorite down south. Oh, and southerners are also the most likely region to order extra cheese on their pizza, as well!
- Midwest: We were actually surprised to discover how much our pizza lovers in the Midwest love their veggies. After pepperoni, the next top-rated pizza toppings in the Midwest were onions, green peppers and mushrooms. Over all, the most popular pizza in the Midwest is the supreme pizza—the perfect combination of meats and veggies.
- West Coast: Our West Coast pizza lovers, not surprisingly, prefer California-style pizza, opting for single-serve pizza over ordering a whole pizza pie. In regards to toppings, people on the West Coast are more likely to order gourmet style pizzas or swap out traditional toppings for more unique options. A popular swap is switching out the traditional mozzarella for goat cheese, or opting to have truffle mushrooms rather than portabella mushrooms. Spinach is another unique option that is ordered frequently on the West Coast.
No matter what type of pizza toppings you love or what region you’re from, we can all share our love of pizza!
