When you want a pizza, you might just open an app or pick up the phone and order one. That said, sometimes having pizza delivered can be unreliable, and it’s almost always an unhealthy choice. You could make your own pizza, but that almost qualifies as a hobby rather than making dinner. The happy medium is a quick and easy frozen pizza.
Here are our leading frozen pizza tips.
How to cook a frozen pizza in the oven
Let’s begin with the basics. First, remove the pizza from the packaging. Most frozen pizzas are contained in a plastic wrap which will need to be removed and discarded. Leaving this on can be hazardous, as the packaging may catch fire in the oven.
Keep the pizza frozen before putting it in the oven. What you don’t want to do is leave the pizza out for enough time that it thaws. If so, it will cause a watery mess in the oven. Making sure the pizza remains frozen before cooking ensures it will taste fresh and delicious. If, for example, you need to preheat the oven, check the instructions, and then return the pizza to the freezer.
There are some exceptions here. For example, Papa Murphy’s pizzas aren’t intended to be frozen, and they include instructions not to freeze the pizza. Always pay attention to the instructions on the packaging. You should preheat the oven to the temperature listed on the packaging and cook it for the amount of time recommended as well.
Now that you have the pizza out of the packaging and the oven is preheated to the instructed temperature, place the pizza on a cooking tray. Alternatively, you can leave the small cardboard tray at the bottom which can also serve as a cooking tray. What you don’t want to do is place the pizza directly on the rack when cooking it.
Cooking a frozen pizza in the microwave
This isn’t the ideal way to make a frozen pizza, as you’ll likely get better results from making it in the oven. Still, if the pizza fits in the microwave oven and you prefer the convenience, it’s a fine substitute.
Just like with the oven, you want to make sure the pizza remains frozen until it goes in. You also want to remove all the packaging and place it on a microwaveable plate.
The pizza may or may not have instructions for microwaving it. If it doesn’t, try cooking it in 10-minute intervals. Once it’s close to being done, check it once every three minutes. Be careful when checking to see if the pizza is done, as it may be very hot.
